Biomass for Biogas

Reference: Biomass Plant for the Biggest Biogas Plant in North Jutland

Location: Grøngas Vrå, South of Hjørring, Denmark

In 2015, Justsen delivered a straw-fired boiler to the biggest biogas plant in North Jutland – Grøngas Vrå. The overall territory of the plant is 87,000 square meters which correspond to the size of twelve football fields. The biogas plant mainly produces biogas from local manure, industrial waste products, and food residues.

Grøngas Vrå plant annually produces about 9 million m3 biomethane in CO2 neutral way. The plant is designed to handle up to 300,000 tons of biomass. In 2018, Justsen was contracted to convert the biomass plant to using olive waste instead of straw as a feedstock due to poor harvests.

System Specification: 7 MW hot water boiler, design pressure 6 bar(g).

Fuel: 2015 – 2018 straw bales (Heston) and from 2018 olive crops.

Fuel Feed System: Stoker.

Justsen Boiler Type: Hot Water Boiler JUE-GVB.

Special Equipment: Initially, the boiler was designed to accommodate straw combustion, where straw bales are lifted with a crane from the storage room onto a straw shredder from where the cut straw is fed directly into the boiler. The inside of the combustion chamber had to be reinforced with a stainless-steel alloy SAF 2205 to eliminate low-temperature corrosion and, thus, protect the boiler from corrosion caused by Chlorine that straw contains.

Flue Gas Cleaning: Justsen designed bag filter.
